Carlo Azeglio Ciampi

President of the Italian Republic, 1999-2006

President of Venice International University, 1995-1999

The funeral of President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi has taken place in Rome, following his death on Friday, September 16, 2016. He was 95 years old.

Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was the first President of VIU, from 1996 to 1999, the year in which he became President of the Republic of Italy; a fitting conclusion to an illustrious career, first at the Bank of Italy where he became Governor, and later in political roles including various ministerial posts throughout the 1990s, and a period as Prime Minister in 1993-1994. Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was a fine statesman, widely respected for his honesty and integrity.

Prof. Paolo Costa, who was Dean at Venice International University, while Ciampi was VIU President, and who was later Mayor of Venice, recalls how Ciampi held a “conviction that one of the destinies of Venice was to become a great city of scholars”, and that he was a strong supporter of the reconstruction of the Fenice Theatre, which he formally re-opened in 2003.

Ambassador Umberto Vattani, incumbent President of VIU, has released the following statement:

“In this sad moment for all Italians, we at Venice International University share our deepest sympathy with President Ciampi’s wife, Franca, and remember the importance of President Carlo Azeglio’s contribution to the birth and development of our Institution.

“I got to know the President while he was still Governor of the Bank of Italy, and while I was at Palazzo Chigi as Diplomatic Adviser to the Prime Minister.

“I later had the honour of receiving him, when he was Prime Minister, during his first official visit abroad, to Germany, where he delivered a moving Lectio Magistralis at the University of Bonn.

“We met frequently in Rome while I was Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry and I was privileged to participate in a group of functionaries that Prime Minister Prodi and Treasury Minister Ciampi had wished to establish to prepare the negotiations for Italy’s entry into the euro area.

“It is with particular fondness that I recall meetings with him when he had already become President of the Republic, a time in which he demonstrated extraordinary leadership in relaunching Italy’s important role in the negotiations for European expansion.

“These are all personal anecdotes which I hold dear, but what has in particular been relevant for VIU is the eminent figure of a great Italian statesman who had an extraordinary intuition: to found a University which is truly unique in the international academic panorama. Venice International University today has 16 member universities from throughout the world. On the shared campus in Venice, students from all over the globe join a unique transnational, interdisciplinary environment where they take part in academic programs focused on important global challenges: sustainable development, ageing populations and welfare, global ethics and governance, the protection and promotion of cultural heritage, and the role of technology and innovation in society. This is President Ciampi’s legacy at VIU.”

The Dean of VIU, Prof. Carlo Giupponi, has expressed his sadness at the news of President Ciampi’s passing, adding that “as a citizen, I am sorry for the loss of a good man who had done much for his Country”.

President Ciampi’s address during the Inaugural Ceremony of Venice International University in 1997, although spoken 20 years ago, is ever more relevant in the current climate of uncertainty in Europe and conflict further afield. In it he touches on themes of the European project and how it arose from the need to build lasting peace so as to avoid a repetition of the rise of exasperated nationalism, anticipating many of the challenges that the world faces today.

On September 19, Venice International University represented by the Dean prof. Carlo Giupponi, participated in the UN Private Sector Forum organized at the UN headquarters in New York.

This year the Forum focused on the role of business in advancing sustainable development to prevent global instability. Hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Forum was organized in collaboration with the Co-Chairs of the United Nations High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly to address Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants. With the theme of Business and the 2030 Agenda: Securing the Way Forward, the Private Sector Forum highlighted important connections between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the new Agenda for Humanity – which, together with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Action Agenda on Financing for Development, are pillars of the 2030 Agenda.

Prof. Giupponi will also attend the Fourth Annual International Conference on Sustainable Development held on September 21-22 in New York.

The aim of the conference is to identify and share practical, evidence-based solutions that can support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s conference theme is Moving Forward: The SDGs in Practice.

On September 26, Venice International University will host the first edition of the Italian Business & SDGs Annual Forum, an initiative promoted by the Global Compact Network Italy Foundation. The meeting has been devised to be an important opportunity for a multi-stakeholder discussion on the role that the private sector is called upon to play in support of the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030.

On 26 September the first edition of the Italian Business & SDGs Annual Forum has been held in Venice at VIU - Venice International University (Island of San Servolo).

The Forum was promoted by the Global Compact Network Italy Foundation with the collaboration of VIU and the support of FriulAdria and Edison SpA.

During the summer months at VIU, there are perhaps fewer students on the island campus of San Servolo, but nevertheless, within the walls of the conference halls and seminar rooms, VIU continues to be a hub of activity.

VIU's campus lends itself especially well during this period to intensive residential programs, with the calmness of the parkland on the island, and the noiselessness of the lagoon beyond; San Servolo is connected, yet detached from the bustling city of Venice, which is of course an attractive destination for attendees.

Every July, VIU together with different partners, organizes a series of high-level research symposia:

July 10-22, 2016
Brain exploration and epilepsy surgery
International School of Neurological Sciences in Venice

The course is targeted to neurologists, neuropediatricians, neurophysiolgists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons and neuroscientists interested in phathophysiology, diagnosis and management of pharmacoresistant epilepsies and in the development of epilepsy surgery programs.

July 10-16, 2016
International School on Lasers in Materials Science
PhD students and young research scientists working in the field of laser-materials interactions. It aims at educating doctorate students in the principles of laser-surface interactions, along with bringing students up-to-date with current state-of-the art in laser materials processing.

July 18-23, 2016
CESifo Venice Summer Institute
The Institute focuses on themes of current interest in European and global economic policy and brings together international economists working on economic policy topics for workshops, panel meetings and discussion.
This year, the main topics are:
The Economics of philanthropy; Disrupted Economic Relationships: Disasters, Sanctions, Dissolutions; Political Economy Aspects of Income (Re-)Distribution; The Economics of Peace and War; Climate Change and Migration

Italy and Japan praise a long lasting history of cultural and commercial relations over the past centuries, endorsed by tight diplomatic relations celebrated this year on their 150th anniversary with a ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

ambasciatore vattani onorificenza 2016On May 11, 2016 Ambassador Umberto Vattani, President of Venice International University, received the Grand Cordon decoration of the Order of the Rising Sun by Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Message from the Dean

At the end of 2015, VIU entered the United Nations Global Compact, a United Nations initiative that aims to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.

After this first success, on February 23, 2016, VIU also joined as Founding Member the Global Compact Network Italy Foundation. Launched in 1999, the Global Compact initiative counts today 13000 corporate and other stakeholders participants, in 161 countries worldwide.

Companies and institutions joining the Global Compact initiative publicly commit to align their corporate strategies and operations with the 10 Global Compact Principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption and to take steps to support UN goals, in order to create a sustainable and inclusive global economy that delivers lasting benefits to people, communities and markets.

The local networks, as the Global Compact Network Italia, work to advance the initiative and its 10 Principles at country level. They help companies understand what responsible business means within different national, cultural and language contexts and facilitate outreach, learning, policy dialogue, collective action and partnerships.

The commitments and the achievements of the Members are periodically assessed through the submission of a report, namely the Communication on Progress (COP) or Communication of Engagement (COE). This document reports on the benefits of Sustainability – in terms of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption - for the Member institution, including, for example, the integration of corporate sustainability into operations, the internal information sharing, and the strengthening of the relationships with stakeholders and investors.

In October 2015 a delegation of Rectors and Professors from the VIU Member Universities headed by VIU President Ambassador Umberto Vattani was received at the Presidential Palace in Rome.

The President of the Italian Republic, the Hon. Sergio Mattarella, expressed in his speech his praise and admiration for such an innovative and successful example of a multicultural and interdisciplinary academic venture.

On October 15-16, major experts from academia and industry, together with policy makers and NGOs representatives will be gathered at Venice International University to bring personal experiences, empirical evidence and institutional positions on the issue of sustainability in the automotive industry.

Through presentations, keynote speeches and open discussions the Symposium will contribute to build a shared vision on sustainability. Specifically, the discussion will address the following key-questions:

- Which are the main differences in the sustainability regulation between Asia, Europe and America?
How do these differences affect the competitive ecosystem? Is there a unique perspective on what
sustainability means across global corporations, or there is rather a variety of standpoints?

- Do investments in sustainability operated by firms affect their financial performance? Which is the
rationale for a company for investing in sustainability and disclosing the actual sustainability results?

- Do the final market (consumers) perceive the sustainability issue as a relevant factor in orienting the
purchase process and, in general, the choice of a product?
