MUHAI | Meaning and Understanding in Human-Centric AI
The MUHAI project (2020-2024) explores a radically new approach to Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and the investigation of meaning and understanding. Muhai will significantly advance our ability to capture more of the rich and complex understanding that humans are capable of. VIU's Program on Sustainability - TEN, is a partner of the project and hosted the kick-off meeting on October-5-9, 2020. The project partners shared their background knowledge on the core subjects, including the notions of meaning, understanding, and the creation of narratives within the framework of Human-Centric AI.

Artificial Intelligence at a Crossroads |
Luc Steels, Scientific Coordinator of the MUHAI project, reviews 70 years of the fascinating history of AI, beginning with Alan Turing and Norbert Wiener who imagined machines that exhibited some form of intelligence, through to the sixties when significant technical advances in computation were made, and then jumping into the 21st century when numerical/behaviorist AI and the symbolic/cognitivist AI traditions reached maturity. Around 2010, a remarkable surge in the availability of data due to the deepening penetration of information technology in human activities and a considerable jump in the power of computers led to a sudden expansion in the use of AI.

Republics and Republicanism Conference June 2021: Call for Papers |
The 2nd edition of the multidisciplinary conference will take place June 11-13, 2021. During recent decades, Republicanism has become a central concern in political theory and history. This body of thought emerged as the main alternative to Liberalism when Marxism lost this role after the fall of the Berlin Wall. There is a renewed interest today while searching for solutions to mounting populism and personalization of power; the issue of inequality and the crisis of democracies. The conference intends to promote further theoretical and historical reflections on such experience, broadening the focus to non-European case-studies and perspectives, and late modern and contemporary times, open to all disciplines.
