This summer, the campus of Venice International University on San Servolo Island is once again hosting a vibrant community of students, researchers, and faculty from around the world. Through an exceptionally rich portfolio of academic initiatives, VIU is offering opportunities for learning, research collaboration, and international exchange that span disciplines, academic levels, and global challenges.
The 2026 summer season combines the long-established strengths of the Globalization Program with a diverse range of Intensive Graduate Activities, creating an environment where undergraduate students, master's students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers can engage in interdisciplinary study and dialogue.
A highlight of the summer is the Globalization Program Summer Session, which brings together Bachelor's and Master's students from VIU member universities in a multicultural and interdisciplinary learning experience. Running from 3 to 28 August, with a virtual component beginning in July, the program offers courses that address some of the most pressing questions of contemporary society. Topics range from artificial intelligence, digital environments, and user experience to anthropology, human movement, One Health approaches linking humans, animals and the environment, and the role of microbes in human history. Through interactive teaching methods, collaborative projects, and international classrooms, students develop critical thinking skills while building lasting global networks.
VIU's Intensive Graduate Activities showcase the breadth of expertise and collaboration across the university network. Developed through the VIU Academic Council and member institutions, these activities are designed to address major societal challenges while fostering interdisciplinary approaches to research and education.
The summer calendar features a remarkable variety of specialized schools and seminars. Programs have explored themes including ageing and longevity, ethics in health care, sustainable organizational transformation, linguistic landscapes and urban communication, migration and transnationalism, global mental health and human rights, and advanced topics in mathematics, molecular biology, and digital media. Other initiatives examine food sustainability, international law in the age of artificial intelligence and cyber technologies, and the future of wireless communications from 5G to 6G. (univiu.org)
What distinguishes these activities is their interdisciplinary character. Participants are encouraged to approach complex challenges from multiple perspectives, bringing together expertise from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, health studies, and law. This approach reflects VIU's longstanding commitment to addressing global issues through international cooperation and cross-disciplinary dialogue.
The summer programs also demonstrate the strength of VIU's international network. Faculty and participants come from universities across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America, transforming San Servolo into a laboratory for global exchange. Whether discussing sustainable futures, trustworthy artificial intelligence, cultural heritage, health, or social transformation, participants benefit from diverse academic traditions and cultural perspectives.
As students and scholars continue to arrive throughout the summer months, the campus remains a dynamic meeting place where education, research, and international collaboration converge. The range and quality of activities on offer reaffirm VIU's role as a unique hub for interdisciplinary and international higher education, providing participants with knowledge, skills, and connections that extend far beyond the classroom.
