May 27-28, 2022

VIU is organizing an important Conference to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the "United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea" - UNCLOS.

Often described as the "Constitution of the Sea", it sets the legal framework for all matters concerning the world's seas and oceans. UNCLOS has now reached nearly 170 signatory States and continues to attract more.

On the first day, in the Arsenale in Venice, the Conference will examine what UNCLOS has achieved during the last 40 years. On the second day, at VIU on the Island of San Servolo, a group of experts from different fields will discuss how the Convention should respond to new realities and how well-equipped it is to meet the challenges of the future. At the end of this working session, a "Venice Statement" will be drafted, signed and submitted to the United Nations.

The Conference is organised together with Ca' Foscari University, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of the Environment and the Italian Navy.
