The following information is provided to professors who have been selected to teach in the Globalization Program at Venice International University. Please pay careful attention to the information and resources provided regarding immigration law and procedures in Italy.
SUMMARY
STEP 1. DETERMINE IF YOU NEED A VISA
If you are a citizen of a European Union country you will not need a work visa while teaching in the Globalization Program.
If you are a citizen of a non-European Union country you will need a work visa while teaching in the Globalization Program. (except UK under 90 days)
Consult the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website to check if you need a visa and to see a list of the Italian Consulates in your jurisdiction:

STEP 2. DETERMINE WHICH TYPE OF VISA
Work Visa for Teaching (Preferred procedure):
The type of work contract that you will have with VIU is a contract for intellectual work - contratto d’opera intellettuale.
Type of Visa:
Subordinate work in particular cases (university professors)
according to article 27, letter c of Legislative Decree n. 286 issued in 1998
(art. 27 del D.Lgs. 286 del 1998).
In 2021 VIU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Italian Ministry of the Interior so that VIU Professors could benefit from a simplified procedure in the request of their Nulla Osta for this category of visa.
Consider however that this type of visa does not allow the professor to bring any dependents with them to Italy for periods longer than 90 days.
If you are planning on coming to Italy with dependents, your family members can either stay for a shorter period, up to 90 days, on a tourist visa (waiver), or you can apply for a Visa for Scientific Research which allows researchers to bring dependents to Italy. This type of visa takes longer to process.
Visa for Scientific Research:
This is the only type of visa that allows visiting professors to bring dependents with them for periods longer than 90 days up to a maximum of 12 months. If you are teaching in the Globalization Program and plan to travel to Italy with dependents (spouse and/or minor children) you will apply for a research visa. Teaching is permitted while in Italy on a Research Visa.
Type of visa:
Visa for Scientific Research
according to Article 27 ter of Legislative Decree n. 286 issued in 1998
(art. 27-ter del D.Lgs. 286 del 1998).
STEP 3. APPLY FOR A NULLA OSTA – ENTRY CLEARANCE
VIU will submit an application for a "Nulla Osta" (entry clearance) to the Immigration Office of the Venice Prefecture (Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione). Consider that different paperwork is required for the teaching and research visas. Refer to the appropriate instructions (see boxes in this page).
