Today's globalized world needs flexible minds, able to move across disciplines, capable of tackling contemporary challenges with innovative humanistic approaches, respecting diversity, understanding, communicating and working with people from other cultures. VIU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences provides a response in this direction.

 

The aims of the School are to:

  • to combine innovative disciplinary approaches that cross the two fields of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • to contribute to an understanding of the challenges posed by economic globalization, environmental change, technological innovation and multiculturalism
  • to promote a deeper and critical understanding of Venice and its region
  • to promote mutual understanding among students and Faculty that come from different countries
  • to cooperate with other institutions of the Venice area (eg. Biennale, Guggenheim)
  • to contribute to the cultural debate in the city and region

The Semester Program:
In the Semester Program students will find a blend of cross-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and disciplinary courses, many of which on contemporary issues or adopting new approaches, comparing or studying cultures, dealing with issues on which VIU has Research Centers, and including courses on Venetian Art and Architecture and Italian and Venetian History and Culture. All courses are English-taught. The Semester Program is for undergraduate and master's level students.


The Globalization Program:
The Globalization Program aims to contribute to the internationalization of VIU’s member universities by giving students the opportunity to study and carry out research in an international context. Furthermore the program is the impetus for an original reflection on globalization within an international network that involves researchers, policy-makers, entrepreneurs, cultural institutions and regional institutions of the countries represented at Venice International University. The Globalization Program is for advanced undergraduate and master's level students.


Intensive Seminars:

The Intensive Seminars are coordinated by the member universities and run throughout the academic year. Groups of students from the Member Universities visit VIU to participate in intensive weeks of study and research.


Summer Schools:

The Summer Schools are 3-4 week programs coordinated by the member universities for undergraduate students. The students live on campus and take intensive university courses, that usually focus on Venice and/or Italy.


VIULECTURES:
VIULECTURES is an initiative promoted by VIU to provide a platform for international and local professors to discuss key and current issues. The lecture series is open to the public.
