A Gift To Marco Polo: Contemporary Art from China

On the occasion of the 53rd Venice Art Biennale, the exhibition “A Gift to Marco Polo: Contemporary Art from China” took place at VIU from June 3 to July 2, 2009.

The opening ceremony took place at VIU on the Island of San Servolo on June 2, 2009 at 6.00 pm.

Nine prominent Chinese contemporary artists - Zhang Xiaogang, Zhou Chunya, He Duoling, Wang Guangyi, Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun, Zhang Peili, Wu Shanzhuan and Ye Fang - participated in the exhibition. As a tribute to Marco Polo, the participating artists combined elements from the East and West in their interpretations of Italian art, European culture and western civilization. Their work reflects what makes modern and the modern Oriental.

The exhibition was organized by Institutions of Chinart, the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai and Venice International University.
Curated by Lu Peng and Achille Bonito Oliva
