World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.
VIU has been invited by UNESCO to present the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR) 2018 titled "Nature-based Solutions for Water". The WWDR 2018 will be officially launched at the World Water Forum in Brazil on March 19.
The Report will be illustrated to VIU students, within the side-initiatives of the Globalization Program spring semester on Sustainable Development.
Nature-based Solutions for Water is central to the current debate of the increasing global water demand, which includes domestic water use, groundwater and water for agriculture and for energy production. This goes alongside with issues of water scarcity, water quality and water related to extreme events.
Nature-based solutions applications, including in urban landscapes, essentially involve the management of vegetation, soils and/or wetlands and offers an opportunity for managing water availability, improving food production, water-related risks, and water quality.
