In a recent interview Ambassador Umberto Vattani, President of the Venice International University, recalls his long and untiring work for the promotion of Italian art and culture, which opened the way to a real "cultural diplomacy".
Milestones in this process are the creation by Vattani of the collection of contemporary art at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1999, the many cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institutes, the exhibitions of the works of important Italian artists all over the world and the support to young Italian artists to link with international artistic trends.
Today, similar cultural exchanges involve Chinese artists, who are invited to visit Italy thanks to a cooperation with Tongji University, Member of VIU.

in occasion of the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Prof. Andrea Rinaldo
8-9 May 2014, Venice International University, Venice, Italy
Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) conferred an honorary doctorate to Professor Andrea Rinaldo of the University of Padua and the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. The award ceremony took place at Venice International University on the evening of 8 May 2014.
In this occasion VIU and INRS jointly promoted an interdisciplinary workshop on Frontiers in Hydrology and Hydrogeoscience that was held at VIU on May 8-9.
Research advances in the interconnected disciplines of Earth system science are being driven by the need to better integrate our understanding of processes across the atmosphere, land surface, and subsurface environments over a wide range of spatio-temporal scales, and by growing challenges related to water, energy, and other resources in the face of global ecosystem changes. This workshop brought together researchers and graduate students working at the forefront of hydrology, environmental modeling, and hydrogeoscience.
The themes of the worshop were: characterization of transport dynamics at the watershed scale; groundwater, carbon sequestration, and geothermal phenomena in deep reservoirs; the interactions between water (fresh and saline), sediment, and vegetation in coastal ecosystems; methodologies for parameter estimation and data assimilation that optimally utilize data from simulation models and observation networks; and several other topics related to subsurface and surface waters. The lecture sessions were followed by roundtable and breakout discussion sessions aimed at spurring new collaborations between participating researchers and institutes.
