VIULectures is back in March 2021 with the first in a series of webinars on topical issues of interest to the VIU Community. This event is part also of VIU's activities to commemorate the 1600th anniversary of the foundation of the city of Venice.

VIU is launching a new Summer School and a webinar series (within the Global Challenges Initiatives) to address one of the most discussed and debated criteria for access to intensive care during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In Italy, during the most dramatic juncture of the pandemic (March-April 2020), in the most affected areas (Bergamo, Brescia, Lodi, Cremona), in some interviews given by doctors on the front line to some newspapers, we heard about "patient selection" and “chronological age criterion”.

Antimicrobial resistance, which has been increasing at a disturbing rate, is now considered a threat to planetary health. Its consequences are even now being felt in the European Union. In fact, the mortality linked to antibiotic-resistant infections on the continent corresponds to approximately 33,000 deaths yearly and the economic burden of antimicrobial resistance has been estimated to be approximately € 1.5 billion per year. Unfortunately, there is even more bad news: the high volume of antibiotics in food-producing animals has contributed to the development of bacteria that can end up in the food chain and/or environment.

The European Interdisciplinary Council on Aging (EICA), has created an ad hoc training proposal in the sector of pneumonia, which is frequent and often associated with serious complications in the elderly population.

In addition to the epidemiological and clinical aspects, the course has opened up a discussion on the various international recommendations in the field of anti-pneumococcal vaccinations.

‘VIU Community’ is a platform where VIU students and Professors can all interact across cultures across different mediums: articles, images, thoughts, intercultural experiences etc.

The platform is managed by the recipients of the RED (Residency-Excellence-Diversity) scholarships. The RED scholarships are awarded every semester to talented students to contribute to the cost of living in Venice for a semester and to promote excellence and diversity in the Globalization Program.

Safety protocols and emergency planning have been prepared with the support of VIU Health and Safety consultants and are published here.

The protocols provide for safe access to VIU including the classrooms and offices.
Students and Professors in the Globalization Program are advised to read the specific information relevant to their program and to accept the co-responsibility pact by filling out the dedicated form.
Discover the mobility for research opportunities offered by VIU to students of the Globalization Program.

Students in the second year of their Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale) or advanced undergraduate students who are studying for a 4-year bachelor degree in any of the member universities, can spend two to four months abroad carrying out research for their Master’s thesis in themes related to the Globalization Program.

Schedules | 2nd semester of AY 2020-2021

The weekly schedule of classes and the orientation week schedule are now available here. On the same page students can find the list of office hours and contacts of the Professors teaching in the program.

As some students coming to Italy must stay at home during their quarantine period, here is a useful collection of information regarding the home delivery services provided by some supermarkets and other shops:

VIU students have the possibility to enrol in one or more courses at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. You can consult the Ca' Foscari webpage to explore the courses you may attend.

Considering the uncertain situation regarding COVID-19 and the different stages that the countries represented in VIU activities are going through, VIU decided to allow maximum flexibility to students and Professors willing to participate in the semester but unable to come to Venice at the beginning of March due to governmental travel restrictions or health issues.

The second PROMARES newsletter is now available. Read all about the project's progress over the past semester

PROMARES aims at tackling the challenges hampering the full-fledged development of the potential for maritime and multimodal freight transport in
the Programme Area. Its main objective is therefore to enhance cross-border maritime and multimodal freight transport by involving transport stakeholder and policy makers facing the same cross-border challenges, from both a strategic and operational perspective, through the increased cooperation among them.

PROMARES | Promoting maritime and multimodal freight transport in the Adriatic Sea is a research project funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia Program.
The Promares Network is led by the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea and involves 12 partners and it is led by the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea.

On December 17, 2020, VIU celebrated the end of the Fall term with a closing ceremony held online.

This term has been challenging, to say the least, but nevertheless, VIU had the pleasure to welcome - physically and remotely -  69 students from 18 different nationalities. Some students even managed to live in Venice throughout this whole period and our hope is that they've been able to enjoy their stay and learn a lot from this new context and from VIU's courses.

SUSPORT project activities have begun with the analysis of the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of Adriatic ports. The main objective is to assess the current performance of Adriatic ports in order to gauge the impact of the measures that will be implemented by the port authorities in the next phases of the project. In this context, VIU elaborated the common methodology to carry out the territorial needs assessment, with particular attention to the evaluation of the carbon footprint related to onshore and maritime operations in the port areas.

The Euro-Project Training Unit at VIU through the Covid-19 crisis has transformed its curriculum in an innovative way while maintaining the quality standard of the courses.

The participants responded splendidly and actively to test and evaluate this new model in order to create an interactive community of trainees dialoguing intensively with the course organizers and trainers.

The Open Innovation Community is open to all stakeholders to discuss and advocate for user-centric approaches and crossmodal cooperation in passenger and freight transport, and who wish to contribute to the debate on the policy requirements of emerging mobility solutions and to validate the results of the SPROUT pilot cities.

If you or your organization wish to become a member of the Open Innovation Community and contribute to the debate on the policy requirements of emerging mobility solutions and to validate the results of the SPROUT pilot cities you can subscribe to the OIC.

The purpose of the ICARUS project is to increase and improve sustainable travel options in coastal transport services and provide alternatives to independent car use.

These solutions include harmonization of timetables, availability of car/bike sharing within transport nodes, innovative ICT solutions for seamless flow of information, integrated intelligent multimodal payment systems, dynamic travel planning, and cross-border intermodal services. The innovative solutions will trigger a behavioral shift away from personally owned vehicles in favor of public and shared services.

Over the course of 2020, the project group analyzed the current state of the art in terms of innovative solutions, mobility gaps and needs, as well as by capitalizing on EU and international practices. This provided useful data to calibrate pilot activities.
