The road testing of modular electrified and self-driving pods is underway in Padua. The innovative transport system called "Next" was developed by the Paduan startup Getplus. The pilot action of testing the experimental module consists of two main phases and will last four months, until November 2021.
The first phase is being implemented in a selected urban area of Padua in reserved and protected lanes and is aimed at collecting data for a technical evaluation of the system. The second phase will be in an urban area with loop routes.

The SPROUT project will feature in the 10th International Congress on Transportation Research, which will take place in Rhodes, Greece, on the 2nd and 3rd of September. you can find more information here

"City Center", the Tel Aviv University research center for cities and urbanism headed by Prof.  Juval Portugali, cordially invites VIU staff members and students to join the upcoming international virtual conference titled:

'the Crisis of Democracy in the Age of Cities'

The conference will last 3 consecutive days, from August 31st to September 2nd, 2021.

After two years of research, co-design sessions, data collection, analysis, writing, designing, and finally publishing our tools and reports, the QUEST Horizon 2020 project has come to its end.

QUEST has released several reports and tools, meant to support quality science communication.

The Toolkits, the Handbook for museum communicators, and the Factsheets based on QUEST policy and incentive recommendations are QUEST's latest outputs. Read more about them below.

VIU joined the ALICE network, Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe.

The European Technology Platform ALICE is set-up to develop a comprehensive strategy for research, innovation and market deployment of logistics and supply chain management innovation in Europe.

The platform will support and assist the implementation of the EU Programs for research: Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.

In the second issue of the MUHAI newsletter read the latest news from this complex project that focuses on human-machine understanding and cooperation, by means of mimicking in machines how humans make sense of experiences and seeks to advance our ability to capture more of the rich and complex understanding that humans are capable of with the use of Artificial Intelligence.

Since the project began nine months ago, the researchers have been investigating the main areas of meaning and understanding through micro-projects that focus on the issues being tackled within the project: AI in society, AI to address inequality, and AI in everyday activities.

Last July 8,  VIU organized a Zoom call to present the internship and mobility opportunities for Globalization Program students enrolled for the 1st semester 2021-2022.

VIU promotes international mobility by providing internship opportunities and scholarships to students of the member universities who attend the Globalization Program. Following the semester of courses at VIU, selected students are offered internships at research centers, universities, cultural organizations and companies in Italy and abroad.

An online info session has been organized to present the internship and mobility opportunities for Globalization Program students enrolled for the 1st semester 2021-2022.

Students who are already pre-registered will receive the link by email on the day of the meeting.

Other interested students can join the info session by signing up via the dedicated form at this link.

The pilot action coordinated by VIU and partners of the interreg ICARUS project has started. Following a route through the regions of Veneto, Friuli Venezia-Giulia (IT) and Istria (HR) the team will investigate the current status of infrastructure and services related to the cross-border cycling corridor between Italy and Croatia, testing intermodal transfer solutions.

I am very glad that "History and Memory" is now one of the specialization tracks of the VIU Globalization Program. We live in forgetful times, with little sense of the past and of the future.

History is more useful than ever to young generations from whatever discipline. It helps to put things in perspective. The essence of things can be spotted by trying to explain where they come from and how they became what they are.

What is the relationship between art and artificial intelligence (AI)? Can AI become a tool for the contemporary artist? Does AI look at a painting the same way we do?

Professor Luc Steels has conducted research on Flemish painter Luc Tuyman's artworks, which were on show during Tuymans’ prestigious 2019 La Pelle exhibition at Venice’s Palazzo Grassi. Several AI techniques were used to dive into the artist’s creative process, and ultimately support Tuymans and other artists in their visual research or artistic decisions.

A more comprehensive explanation of this process can be read in the article "Luc Tuymans through the Lens of AI" available on the MUHAI project website. Luc Steels is MUHAI project Scientific Coordinator for Venice International University.

The results of this investigation were presented at the exhibition SECRETS, held at Bozar Brussels from April 3 to May 2, 2021.

Venice International University and the MUHAI Project were cooperating partners in the workshop on Archives and AI: Coping with Climate Change, held at VIU premises on the San Servolo Campus on May 22-24, 2021.

The event was held in occasion of the launch of the exhibition entitled "Navigating Aqua Granda, a digital community memory", within the framework of "Aqua Granda, a digital community memory" project, launched in November 2020 by the EU H2020 ODYCCEUS project and Science Gallery Venice.

One of main outputs of this project is a book, available in open access at the following link: https://bit.ly/3bVUJ8n

The QUEST Project proudly announces the launch of the QUEST Podcast, a series of conversations with leading science communication professionals around Europe. The main goal is to learn about the challenges and current trends that impact their work, and hear their advice on how other science communicators can improve the effectiveness of their communication activities. Over the course of the six episodes, a particular focus is given on views from female science researchers and specialist science and technology journalists.

The QUEST project has recently released its toolkits: new resources to support communication about science.

The toolkits were developed to fill in a gap that was identified in the European science communication landscape; the analysis showed that science communicators would benefit from additional resources that support the development of their skill sets.
