"Course for Sustainability - Resilience and Sustainability of Municipalities"

The Course for Sustainability is back at VIU with a special agenda designed for 25 high-level policy makers and governmental representatives of Ukraine.
The Course is built on successful past editions and is designed to prepare Ukraine key stakeholders to be resilient in the face of growing environmental and sustainability challenges. The participants are selected among director generals and head of departments of different Ministries, State agencies, local governments and associations.
Through discussions on how to improve the endurance, flexibility and adaptive capacity of communities, the Course aims to promote the implementation of concrete actions to achieve resilience. Key topics will be: climate change, energy, water, waste & urban social sustainability.
The Course for Sustainability series was launched started in 2003 thanks to the support of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea. The initiative is jointly organized by the Thematic Environmental Network Center (TEN) of the Venice International University and the Regional Environmental Center (REC).

The 2014 Course for Sustainability took place at Venice International University, San Servolo Island, Venice, from September 28 to October 5 2014, and will featured two capacity-building components.
The first component was structured as a five days course (between September 29 and October 4) targeting the main challenges to sustainable development and resilience in the specific field of watersheds management. The selected participants included high-level officials from Ministries of the Environment and Municipal authorities from beneficiary Countries adjoining two important river basins in the Western Balkans: the Drin River Watershed (Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia) and the Drina River Watershed (Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia).
The second component, an innovative add-on lasting two days (September 29-30), was structured as a high-level roundtable discussion. Founders, members and partners of the CEO Platform for Green Growth in MENA joined the discussion on green growth challenges including water, energy resource efficiency and green public procurement and its potential applications, among other sustainability issues.

VIU_TEN Center is partner in EUCLID – EU-China Lever for IPM Demonstration, which was launched at the kick off meeting held at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in Sophia-Antipolis, France, on September 28-29.
EUCLID is a four-year Research and Innovation Action funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020. The objective is to secure food production for the increasing worldwide population while developing sustainable production methodologies to fight pests with an Integrated Pest Management approach (IPM), to be used in the European and Chinese agriculture.
EUCLID research activity aims at developing more sustainable pest management methods in Europe and China in order to reduce the negative effects of pesticides on human health and the environment, to reduce economic losses in agriculture, and to provide scientific support to EU and China policies.
Tomatoes, leaf vegetables and grapes are the main crops of research, due to their economic relevance in the targeted markets; however, research outcomes will also have an impact on other crops. In addition, the project will consider the entire food product chain from agriculture to the final consumers.
18 partners from 7 countries – Italy, France, UK, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, China – form EUCLID project consortium, which have been selected as to integrate in the project different experiences, including universities, research institutions, SMEs, retailers, in order to reach a variety of stakeholders such as farmers, consumers, policy-makers, scientists and entrepreneurs.
VIU is leader of WP5 – Dissemination, and is involved in all WPs through research activities aimed at developing recommendations for EU and Chinese policy-makers, farmers and companies to support the entrance in the market of the proposed IPM packages.
The Center of Competence in the Agro-environmental Sector – AGROINNOVA – of the University of Turin and AgriNewTech are the other Italian Partners in the project.
