Guest Lecture: America, a Bundle of ContradictionsLecture by Professor William Chafe, Department of History, Duke University.
Monday May 12, 2008, 5.00pm, Room 9-A
Prof. Chafe will talk about three abiding tensions in American life - between a belief in community and a belief in individualism,
between racism and democracy, and between American exceptionalism and partnership with world alliances. Tensions that get wrapped up in this year's elections, but go back all the way to 1630.
The lecture will embody some discussion of the elections, and also of Americanism and anti-Americanism.
Prof. Chafe was Professor at VIU in Spring 2007, when he taught courses on South Africa and America: Apartheid and Segregation and 20th Century Leaders: Private Lives and Public Careers.
