July 16 - 22, 2006. Communication Profession and Gender studiesTeaching personnel
Prof. Romy Froehlich
Sonja Peters Aim of the course and analytical description
How can communication science and theory be useful in public relations as a profession? And why do gender studies in particular matter in this context not only in theory but as well in practical terms as working as a PR professional? We want to find answers to these questions and show how theoretical know-how can be of use for a successful career in PR. Against the background of central (PR) theories/models and gender differences we want to get students prepared for their future professional lives in PR.
The seminar aims at consciousness rising about important structures and career mechanisms of the field, challenging popular clichès and stereotypes of PR, (re-)defining perceptions and images of PR as a profession and presenting main success strategies. These aims will be pursued both by theoretical projects and practical exercises in terms of career coaching. Embedded into the wider theoretical context of gender differences, practical exercises will particularly focus on the implications of gender differences on the three main communication situations of public relations experts: profiling (e.g positioning and presentation of oneself), communication inside a team (e.g meetings) and handling of clients (e.g consulting).
The aim is to become conscious of the usually gendered usage of language and non verbal behaviour in typical professional professional communication situations and to train gender sensible professional behaviour in public relations.
