Architecture and Philosophy: description

Document Actions
Wilhelm Vossenkuhl, Department of German Literature, LMU - Thomas Splett, Department of Philosophy, LMU - Winfried Nerdinger, Director of "Architekturmuseum", Munich - Jochen Witthinrich, Architect and urban planner
The seminar explores the relationship between architecture and philosophy. We will deal with architects who are evidently influenced by philosophical thought. Architects like, e.g., Bruno Taut and Mies van der Rohe were influenced by Nietzsche. On the other hand, there are philosophers like, e.g. Wittgenstein, who were not only inspired by the writings and works of architects, but wanted to adopt the activity of construc-tion to their theories. In addition to the examination of the interplay between philoso-phy and architecture by means of examples the seminar will also ask questions of interest for both philosophers and architects: What are the criteria for architectural beauty? What are the standards of good human dwelling? What is the role of histori-cal awareness and aesthetic cultivation in contemporary architecture? How does the attitude of theory and perception relate to the attitude of constructing and building? What could it mean to understand pursuing architecture as thinking and philosophy as constructing?
Two preparatory meetings in Munich will try to bridge the gap between the disci-plines. During the morning sessions at VIU on San Servolo we shall discuss impor-tant issues concerning the relationship between architecture and philosophy. The discussions will follow short presentations by the students (see the texts below). The theoretical approach will be followed by practical exercises in the afternoon including excursions to various places and buildings in Venice, which may allow an application of the results of the discussions. Small groups of students will deal, e.g., with the connection and division that is embodied in the Venician landscape and express their ideas in sketches and models.
We would like to document the seminar in a print version of these sketches and of the seminar papers.
