Sino-Italian Sustainable Development and Environmental Management Advanced Training Program
In 2002 the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS, formerly known as IMET) has launched a bilateral cooperation project with the Ministry of Environmental Protection China (MEP, former SEPA) and the Italian Trade Commission of Beijing (ICE Beijing) entitled Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for Environmental Protection (SICP). The SICP was presented at the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit as part of the United Nations Agreements and International Protocols for Sustainable Development.
In 2003, Venice International University inaugurated the Sustainable Development and Environmental Management Advanced Training Program as part of the Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for Environmental Protection.
The Program offers advanced training courses on Environmental Management and Sustainable Development for senior government officials, professors, researchers, managers and experts from the People’s Republic of China.
The core aim of the Program is to foster and further stimulate concrete actions on sustainable development in the People's Republic of China. During the training courses, trainees are provided with both theoretical issues and case studies related to European and Italian experiences on environmental protection. The exchange of knowledge and experience on best available technologies and practices are among the most relevant opportunities offered by this cooperation activity.
The training courses are structured as a set of two-week modules and include scientific activities at Venice International University (Venice), the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (Rome) and AGROINNOVA (Turin). The core activities take place at the Venice International University on the island of San Servolo, where the headquarters of the program are located.
The following Chinese institutions have been participating in the training programs:
Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST)
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS)
Ministry of Environmental Protection of China (MEP)
Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau (BMEPB)
Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau (SEPB)
Tianjin Science and Technology Committee (TSTC)
The participants come from different provinces of and are selected by the Chinese institutions among representatives of the Chinese government, universities and the media involved in environmental management.
The speakers were selected among outstanding representatives of the academia, the public sector and private companies, as to cover a wide range of topics and to present practical case studies in the frame of sustainable development issues.
In order to consolidate the network of the different actors – participants, lecturers, government officials, experts and entrepreneurs – that have been involved in the Program, the Environmental Training Community Newsletter has been launched in November 2005 and will be jointly published by TEN and IMELS.
