Course for Sustainability
The Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory, Land and Sea has recognised the need to assist the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in implementing sustainable development through their policy making. Venice International University and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) have formed a partnership, with the support of Agroinnova and Central European University (CEU), to offer a high-level and specialised course entitled, Course for Sustainability: Strategies, Methodologies, Policies and Actions for Central and Eastern Europe.
Launched in 2004, the Course for Sustainability is an educational programme for key government officials responsible for the “three pillars” of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental well-being for all in the present and future generations. It is designed to give members of various ministries and agencies — not only environmental — from a group of target countries a chance to examine the major approaches to sustainable development.
This course aims at enhancing the capacity of key senior government officials and other stakeholders in the target countries to ensure that the policies and programmes of their governments are more sustainable - environmentally, socially and economically.
A broad mix of government officials from various agencies were invited, not only from ministries of environment, water, energy, education, health, finance and the interior as previously, but also from national institutes, regional development agencies and the media.
