Joint Workshop on Sino-Italian Comparative Studies on Sustainable Development at TEN Center, 16-17 April, 2007

TEN Center held a joint workshop on Sino-Italian Comparative Studies on Sustainable Development in cooperation with Tsinghua University and SSAV – School for Advanced Studies in Venice. Professors and researchers from Italy and China addressed critical issues of Sustainable Development: water, air and soil pollution and waste and polluted site management.
Climate change is now an urgent problem. All nations must look at the challenge of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases with a view to developing international agreements on international action beyond 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol is set to expire. Prof. Can Wang of Tsinghua University and Dr. Valentina Bosetti of the ENI Foundation of Venice presented their papers which on the topic of air pollution in the framework of climate change.
 

Water pollution is a hot topic for China which is facing serious and pressing problems in terms of resource management and environmental issues also linked to health risks for the population. On the one hand, Prof. Guanghe Li and Prof. Hongying Hu of Tsinghua University, underlined the rapid worsening and shortening of water quality and quantity, while Prof. Bruno Pavoni and Prof. Giovanni Maria Zuppi of the University of Venice reported on local priorities and monitoring tools necessary for facing the water management issue.

Industrial ecology was treated by Prof. Ignazio Musu and Dr. Ilda Mannino of the TEN Center who presented a research paper on the industrial site of Porto Marghera, in which they suggest an extremely innovative proposal for managing this industrial area as an ecological industrial park.

Waste Management (Prof. Jiang Jianguo, Tsinghua University; Prof. Paolo Pavan, Ca’ Foscari University), ecological risk assessment (Dr. Paola Agostini, VEGA) and contaminated site remediation (Prof. Margherita Turvani and Dr. Stefania Tonin, IUAV) proved to be interesting and stimulating fields for comparing experiences of environmental management in China and Italy, and represent stimulating topics to open a debate and to develop common research for the two universities.
