Two of the most important questions now being debated in Italy and in other developed countries such as the United States are the effects of globalization and immigration on the nation’s economy.
A recent study found out that in the U.S. the role of immigrants in the American economy is becoming dramatically important, especially in the high-tech industries, such as engineering and information technologies.
Benchmarking this study, this project aims to better understand the economic and intellectual contribution of qualified immigrants to the Veneto economy.
The study takes into consideration the companies with at least a foreign-born founder, especially in the manufacturing and B2B services industries, to analyze, through a survey, their economic contribution to the overall industry, their value chain, the reasons behind their migratory paths but also their educational background.
To understand their intellectual contribution, this research analyzes the international patents that foreing-born people filed in Italy, but also the presence of immigrants in the Veneto Universities, so to investigate also the ability of Italian universities to attract students from other countries.
In order to do so, part of the study will consist in a survey addressed to PhD foreign-born students, to understand why they chose Italy, what they expect to do in the next future and what difficulties they faced or are facing studying in Italy.
