Document Actions
The Joint Undergraduate Program has been developed into the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The activities of the School, including Semester Programs, Intensive Seminars and Summer Programs, will be introduced by the professors to an international audience of students of different nationalities. On the occasion Juha Hemanus, senior concept designer at Nokia, and Tina Gonsalves, a multimedia artist, will present the ONLY PLANET: Italy through the lens of Mobile Technologies workshop, organized by VIU and NOKIA.
ONLY PLANET: the workshop
Art and creativity are cornerstones of Italian culture. This is seen in Italy’s rich cultural heritage and also in the business sector where Italian companies are leaders in design and fashion.

What is the backdrop of this creative process?
The workshop's aim is to find new ways of narrating Italian Creativity and Contemporary Culture through photo and video capture using mobile technologies.

Students will be guided step-by-step in this creative process by Tina Gonsalves a multimedia artist based in London, by Juha Hemanus, senior concept designer at Nokia and by VIU researchers, discovering new ways of communicating Italian creativity in a global context using mobile phones provided by Nokia. Working in groups, the results will be photo and video projects exhibited at the end of the semester. The group members of the best project will win a trip to Helsinki to participate in the annual Nokia Only Planet conference in September 2007.

SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES: the project
Today's globalized world needs flexible minds, able to move across disciplines, capable of tackling contemporary challenges with innovative humanistic approaches, respecting diversity, understanding, communicating and working with people from other cultures. VIU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences provides a response in this direction.

The School's academic program offers a high-level integrative multi-cultural experience to all students of the universities associated to VIU. Every semester, a different set of professors from different continents teach courses in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences, i.e. human creativity, imagination and beliefs, and the analysis of human interaction, organization and institutions.

In the Semester Program students will find a blend of cross-disciplinary and disciplinary courses, many of which are on contemporary issues or adopting new approaches, comparing or studying cultures, dealing with issues on which VIU has Research Centers, such as Sustainability and Technological Innovation, and including courses on Venetian Art and Architecture, History of Ancient and Modern Venice, Italian Contemporary History and Culture and Italian for Foreigners.
