Summer Institute in the Humanities 2003/2004
The Venetian Renaissance: Tradition and the Circulation of Knowledge.
The purpose of the institute is to expose advanced graduate students to the study of sixteenth-century Venice, its history and its monuments.
Summer Institute in Humanities is an intense week-long experience that has two phases: the first in year one (2003) consists of lectures and site visits (please see draft program below) and the second phase, in the summer of 2004, consists of graduate presentations to the reassembled group.
The format is roughly based on that of the program which we ran in 2001-2002, but we have decided for a variety of reasons to concentrate the experience each year into one week, and to focus on a series of themes or issues that bring out the unique quality of the Venetian ambient, and the relation of the city to the development of knowledge and technology (defense, printing) in the rest of the world.
