Prof. Dr. Friederike Klippel - Chair of English Language Education at LMU Munich
Course Description
Processes like globalisation and increasing mobility among the population have led to a growing importance of foreign language competence for people in Europe and elsewhere. However, foreign language instruction at schools remains within traditional confines of methods and lesson content and does not yet prepare learners for living, studying and working in another language. This is due to the fact that there remain a number of unsolved issues as regards language learning and language education.
The seminar will deal with a range of aspects which determine current foreign language research. We will look both at foreign language instruction at schools from primary level upwards and at modern conceptions of media-based autonomous language learning with a focus on work-related use of a foreign language. Participants will report on their own research projects spanning the wide field outlined above. Topics include e.g. learning English through storytelling at primary school; cross-influence of second and third languages in a school setting; testing elementary learners; the relationship between acquisition and language loss; laptop-based methodology for ELT (English language teaching); training online tutors for autonomous language learning.
