Venice in the Literary Imagination: course description

Document Actions
Gaye Rowley, Waseda University. Tuesdays and Thursdays 17.00-18.30
Venice has long been a source of inspiration for writers of drama, fiction, and poetry.
The city has served as an atmospheric backdrop against which characters discover, re-invent, and on occasion even lose themselves.
In this course we will read and discuss a number of works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century fiction set in Venice, focusing on changing perceptions of the city in the literary imagination.
