Ecological Industrial Development. Topics
Industrial Environmental Issues
Sustainable Industry
These themes were also developed in some lectures and visits of the Advanced Training Program on Sustainable Development and Environmental Management.
. The position of Italian industries facing the new problems deriving from restrictive environmental regulations and provisions aiming at reducing the environment’s pollution
Industrial Environmental Issues
Lectures and visits
. Green chemistry as an opportunity to reduce and eliminate the generation and use of hazardous substances, through the use of some tools and new fuels; green chemistry as one of the most important and promising expressions of technological progress.
. Biotechnology researches: one of the most important expressions of technological progress; legally protected through patents; need to have efficient liability systems to avoid having risky or dangerous biotechnological innovations awarded with patents. Sustainable Development and the problems arising when dealing with intellectual property rights.
. Industry waste and water resources: waste and water regulation in Europe and in Italy, focusing on urban waste water treatment; main directives such as Integrated Pollution and Prevention Control Directive and the Water Framework Directive, together with a more specific explanation of waste generation, collection, reuse, transfer and treatment in process industries.
. Industrial ecology: research about the possibility for industry to face environmental issues through industrial ecology, which aims at restructuring the industrial system inspired by our understanding of biological ecosystems; analysis of four applications of industrial ecology; in particular: greening the supply chain, extending producer responsibility, helping industrial symbiosis in order to exploit the efficiency and the synergies offered by industries’ geographic proximity, and shifting from products to more services.
Sustainable Industry
Lectures and visits
. Site reclamation: principles and legislation in Italy, case study of the Megasite of Porto Marghera (Venice), an area that is facing serious environmental pollution due to chemical and petrochemical industries.
. Environmental auditing in industrial firms as an important tool to show how organizations deal with environmental impact and to ensure they are really taking actions to reduce it and protect the environment; obligatory audits or voluntary audits, as in the case of EMAS (process control) and Ecolabel (product control).
. Environmental industrial restructuring. Two similar case studies of redevelopment of contaminated industrial sites: the VEGA - Venice Science and Technology Park and the project developed by Bagnoli Futura, near Naples.
