Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is an institution directly under the State Council and it is the highest academic research organization in the fields of philosophy and social sciences, and a national center for comprehensive studies in the People's Republic of China.

CASS was established in May 1977 growing out of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. CASS is now made up of 31 research institutes and more than 50 research centers, which carry out research activities covering about 260 sub-disciplines of different grades; among them 131 are key disciplines. Its basic mission is to promote research and to undertake and fulfil key state-research projects in the light of China’s national conditions, economic and social development strategies and trends; its task is also to organize academic exchange between the Academy and foreign countries.

Starting from 2000, in the frame of the Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for Environmental Protection (SICP), CASS has implemented a series of cooperative researches in the fields of energy, water resources management etc. with IMELS (formerly known as IMET), and it has co-organized workshops with IMELS such as the international conference for the Development of Energy Efficiency, New and Renewable Energies, the International Water Forum on Integrated River Basins Management and the China South-North Water Diversion Project.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences together with MOST has participated in the courses since the first year of activity.
