New Islamic Thinkers

Document Actions

This series of scientific and academic lectures was conceived by the Mediterranean Observatory Foundation like the series “Grandi Conferenze” of the year 2005. It aims to present, (and to involve) some of the most important political and cultural personalities of the Mediterranean Countries.

The specific aim of this initiative for the year 2006 is to give a forum to some relevant voices of the tolerant and reformist Islam in the Mediterranean and surrounding areas. The series New Islamic Thinkers provides a platform for discussion among famous thinkers and professors of those countries, by giving space to people focussing their attention on study and research on Arabic reformism. This support to the most enlightened Muslim opinion leaders is an real contribution in the fight against extremism and terrorism: the aspect of intellectual dialogue that accompanies and steers the engagement in pursuing the main aims of security.

In addition to ICeSD, the cycle involves the following organizations:
IsIAO - Istituto Italiano per l’Africa e l’Oriente
Università La Sapienza, Rome
Istituto Universitario Orientale, Naples
ANSAmed, Naples,
ISPI - Istituto di Studi di Politica Internazionale, Milan
Fondazione per la Sussidiarietà, Milan

During 2006, five New Islamic Thinkers will be invited to run seminars in Rome, Naples, Milan, Bologna and Venice. At the end of the program, a report will be published and disctributed to institutional, political, scientific and academic centers.

Yadh Ben Achour (Tunisia), Rachid Benzine (Morocco),  Mustapha Cherif (Algeria), Abd-al-Haqq Ismaïl Guiderdoni (France) and Hasan Hanafi (Egypt) are the five “Muslim Wise Men” invited to take part in this initiative.

In Venice the activity is supported by the Province of Venice, that hosts the lectures in the Assembly Hall of its magnificent headquarters of Ca’ Corner on the Grand Canal in Venice.
