General Information
Venice is an immense ‘historic centre’ and is entirely pedestrian. It hosts approximately twelve million visitors each year. In the interest of residents and tourists alike, respect the following simple guidelines:
when you are walking through the city, especially in the narrowest ‘calli’ (or streets), keep to the right, one person behind the other, allowing room for people coming from the other direction, or for people who want to walk faster than you;
if you stop on a bridge remember to leave room for others to pass, especially people transporting goods;
keep the city clean. It is prohibited to have picnic lunches on bridges and around monuments.
As in any city pick-pockets are active especially on boarding docks and vaporetti, and in the more crowded streets.
Beware of touts who might offer you, without the proper authorization, visits to glass showrooms, stores, parking areas or means of transportation.
Disabled tourists may visit the city by following the itineraries suggested by Comune di Venezia.
Banks
Most opening hours for banks are from 8.30 to 13.30 and 14.30 to 15.30. However, different banks often have different afternoon opening hours.
You can change money with a valid passport and a minimal service charge at the counter marked ‘cambio‘. There are also several exchange agencies throughout the city. The best place to change cash is at the Central Post Office at Rialto or simply use ATM machines to withdraw cash.
The closest ATM machine to San Servolo is found just off Piazza San Marco, walk under the clock tower, and you will find it 20 m. on, to the left.

Libraries
Most libraries can be accessed by anyone for consultation, however they do require an identification card to be left at the entrance. Almost all libraries have closed shelves and therefore you must first consult the online or card catalogue. In some cases, you must have a special pass in order to check out books.
