Reediting Kant's Three Critiques. Issues of Text and Commentary in Critical Perspective
Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" (1781/1787), "Critique of Practical Reason" (1788) and "Critique of the Power of Judgment" (1790) are currently undergoing new annotated editions as part of the update of the Academy Edition of Kant's Collected Works.
First presented to the public in 1897, the Academy Edition functioned as the model for later historical-critical editions. Through today the Academy Edition has maintained its international status as a standard for editorial work. In the case of Kant's three Critiques, the defects of the Academy Edition are, for the most part, due not to the overall conception of the Academy Edition but to the inadequate realization of its guidelines.
Therefore the new edition of the three Critiques aims at a conservative treatment of the established text in the original edition. More specifically, the new editions will address the historical dimension of Kant's texts by providing contextual references and explanatory notes that reflect the state of research that has been reached since the original publication of these works in the Academy edition. Also the Academy edition had subjected Kant's texts to extensive linguistic standardization and modernization.
By contrast, the new edition of the three Critiques will preserve the linguistic appearance of the original. Moreover, for the first time in the history of the Academy edition, the two original editions of the "Critique of Pure Reason" will be presented opposite each other in that half of the work that Kant had subjected to extensive revisions. The seminar is intended to present the new edition of Kant's three Critiques to an informed student audience and provide the editors with the opportunity to present for discussion the most important textual emendations as well as the newly written explanatory notes prior to the three works' publication. The seminar is also intended to introduce interested advanced students to the making of one of the most significant editorial projects in philosophy today and to help stimulate their own interest in further editorial work.
